Newton County, Arkansas. It’s a place of unsurpassed beauty in the heart of the Ozark Mountains. It’s the hills, the woods, the streams and rivers interspersed with the Ozark National Forest, all of which cradle the Buffalo National River. It’s the incredible variety of wildlife, forest, and plant life. It’s the small towns and rural areas populated by a hardy people that choose to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
This sunny picture has a dark cloud, however. Because of the sparse population and the rugged terrain, Newton County has become a dumping ground for unwanted companion animals, mostly dogs and cats. It is a situation that is desperate and heart-rending.
The mission of the Newton County Animal Shelter is to provide resources for unwanted animals through education, adoption, fostering, low-cost spay/neutering, and ultimately a shelter to house these defenseless animals.
Presently, the NCAS is made up of a few concerned volunteers that are doing their best with very limited resources to make things better for these pets. The focus has been on education, public service, and spay/neuter/vaccination services for citizens of Newton County. The long-term goal is to build an operating shelter to save and provide shelter for homeless animals and when possible, re-unite lost pets with their owners.
